Where do ticks live?

Preventing tick bites

The most effective way in prevent tick bites is to stay away from areas where they are likely to reside. However, this is not always possible and depending where you live, this might prevent youself from ever leaving your house. If you live in an area that has a high risk for ticks, we suggest you cover your clothing and shoes with permethrin. This chemical will kill any ticks that comes in contract with it. If you have exposed skin, spray it with repellent that contains DEET.

When you get home after spending time outside, be sure to check yourself over in the mirror. If possible, have a friend or family member check the areas of your body you can’t directly see. It is also a good idea to get into a shower within 2 hours of returning home. This will also wash off the chemicals in any repellent on your body.

Checking for ticks

Checking for ticks isn’t hard, but it’s vital to be thorough when you do. Check your clothes first, then your body. Pay close attention to your hair and underarms as the are some of their favorite hiding spots. If possible, have a friend or family member assist you. An extra pair of eyes are always helpful.
